Legend
As per the Legend, King Vallala of Tiruvannamalai, was an ardent adviser of Lord Shiva.Once Lord Shiva appeared as a child since him.The king had no child and Lord Shiva promised to pretend to have a fighting his last rituals.The king died regarding a Masi Magam day and as per the accord, Lord Shiva performed his last rites.

The saints started to ferociousness their knack and mantras and attacked Shiva surrounded by various forms of deadly animals, culminating in the form of a crazy elephant. As the elephant took a stance to violent behavior Lord Shiva, he  hastily disappeared from there.

On seeing this Parvati was tensed taking place and she was fearful that every one of the worlds will inherit a fall moreover the desertion of Lord Shiva. The elephant, however, was no get in the company of for Shiva. Shiva killed the elephant and emerged by wearing the elephant’s skin as the garment. This is known as”Gaja Samhara”. Soon the saints came to know their error and apologised Lord Shiva to forgive them.
